Vladimir Shukhov

He was called late 19th — early 20th centuries. Shukhov is for us and for the world personification of genius in the art of engineering, as well as is rightly recognized as a poetic genius of Russia, — scientific genius.

Vladimir G. Shukhov was born (16) 28 August in 1853 in the city of Belgorod Graivoron County Kursk province. Nature has generously endowed this extremely talented man.

He has created dozens of structures, characterized by bold solutions, novelty, practicality: nozzle for combustion of fuel oil, airlift, oil pipelines, storage tanks, installation of the thermal cracking of oil, steam boilers, bridges, mesh and arched ceilings, hyperboloid tower etc.

In 1880 Shukhov created a steam nozzle for combustion of oil, one of the best in the world. Offered to pump oil through pipelines, like water, and in 1879 built the first Russian oil pipeline. Brought "Shukhov formula" to calculate the movement of oil through pipes, which are still used by engineers around the world. For the transport of oil on the water Shukhov was the first in Russia to build oil tankers.

On his projects were built many thousands of large riveted iron barges of up to 150 m — at the time a miracle of construction equipment. The question of the storage of oil and oil products Shukhov decided by the construction of large riveted iron tanks, tens of thousands of whom were spread out across the country.

Special attention is paid Shukhov refining. He invented the cracking process, ahead of America for 20 years, where only appeared in 1912 a patent (Borton) of the same content.

Hyperbolic iron Shukhov towers have become widespread in the Soviet Union and were used in the U.S. Navy. For radio-transmitting Shukhov in 1921, built in Moscow at Shabolovke shestiyarusnuyu iron tower height of 160 m in the form of a hyperboloid. With her first time in the USSR began regular broadcasts mass, and since 1945 — shows. Shukhov is often compared to the Edison.

engineering genius died February 2 in 1939.
