This professional holiday was established by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR number 3018-X from October 1 1980 "On holidays and memorial days", as amended by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR number 9724-XI from November 1 1988 "On Amendments to the legislation of the USSR on holidays and memorial days."
initiators of the appeal to the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR by a group of prominent Soviet geologists led by Academician AL Yanshin. And the reason for treatment was the discovery in 1966 of the first fields of West Siberian oil and gas province.
