Day of the Strategic Missile Forces

Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) as the Armed Forces was created December 17, 1959 on the decision of the government of the USSR.

May 31 in 2006 on the basis of the Decree of the President of Russia ? 549 "On the establishment of professional holidays and memorial days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation" was established strategic missile holiday — Day of the Strategic Missile Forces, celebrated each year on December 17.

Strategic Missile Forces are the backbone of Russia's strategic nuclear forces. The troops consist of missile armies, military units. In part there are associations, connections, launch sites, landfills, separate research station, a research institute of higher military schools, training centers for junior specialists and school technicians, arsenals, repair factories, central base.

In 1997, there was an association of Strategic Rocket Forces, Military Space Forces, army missile and space defense troops of the Defense Forces into a single view of the Russian Armed Forces — Strategic Rocket Forces.

Since June 2001, the Strategic Missile Forces transformed into two kinds of forces — the Strategic Rocket Forces and the Space Forces.

vysheoboznachennyh decree annulled Presidential Decree number 1239 of December 10 1995 "On establishing the Day of the Strategic Missile Forces and the Day of the Military Space Forces." Day of the Space Forces celebrated annually 4 October.
