The people of Azerbaijan, continuing a long tradition of statehood, declared their intention to defend the Republic of Azerbaijan to guarantee the democratic system, to achieve the establishment of civil society and to live in friendship and peace and security with other nations .
The Constitution of the Republic adopted November 12 in 1995, and on the same day in independent Azerbaijan held its first parliamentary elections.
According to Constitution, the Azerbaijani government — democratic, legal, secular and unitary republic. State power in the country is divided into executive, legislative and judicial. The executive power is vested in the President, who is elected for a term of 5 years. The President himself forms the government and only the appointment of the Prime Minister gets the consent of Parliament.
The decision to establish the Day of the Constitution was adopted February 6 in 1996.
Prior to 2006, Constitution Day in Azerbaijan was a festive day off. However, in late 2006, the Azerbaijani parliament, although it retained Constitution Day in the number of public holidays, but excluded him from the list of non-working days.
