Given the important role of the railway workers of Azerbaijan in economic development and social life of the country, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev October 7 in 2005 ruled:
1. October 13 of each year — the day of the organization of independent Azerbaijan Railways — proclaimed the Day of the professional holiday of workers of Azerbaijan Railway.
2. This Regulation shall enter into force upon signature.
Railway Transport of Azerbaijan is one of the most important places in the economic development of a substantial part of freight and passenger traffic. It is the largest in extent (2,125 kilometers) and the volume of traffic the rail network in the South Caucasus, more than half of which is electrified.
The date of birth of the Azerbaijani Railways is in January 1880, when the operation of the first in the country 20-kilometer railway line on the Baku — Sabunshi — Surahany. At that time, the railroad was intended primarily to carry oil from fields in the Absheron Baku port.
Prior to 1991, Azerbaijan Railway consisted of three divisions — Baku, Ganja and Nakhchivan. After gaining independence Azerbaijan and separating it from the structure of the railways of the Ministry of Transport of the USSR was held radical restructuring of the railway system.
