Astronomy Day in Armenia

8 January in 2009, the Government of Armenia, it was decided to declare September 18 day astronomy.

The date was chosen due to the fact that the September 18, 1908 in Tiflis was born academician — prominent Armenian scholar, founder of Theoretical Astrophysics, National Hero of Armenia. As the Minister of Education and Science Spartak Seyranian Ambarzumian great legacy is a contribution to world astronomy.

Academician Viktor Ambartsumian (1908-1996), twice Hero of Socialist Labour, twice winner of the Stalin Prize and the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Viktor Ambartsumian worked in the physics of stars and nebulae, stellar astronomy and dynamics of stellar systems , cosmogony of stars and galaxies. Among his many scientific achievements — the theory of light scattering in turbid media, stellar associations and the evolution of stars, the physics of stellar envelopes and extragalactic astronomy.

In the name of Academician Ambartsumian named a minor planet, and the Byurakan Observatory in Armenia, founded by he was a great scholar.

Today Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. VA Ambartsumian — one of the leading research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. The observatory is located in Aragatsotn region on the southern slope of Mt at an altitude of 1490 m observatory complex of buildings is an architectural monument. Over the years the staff of the Observatory, a plurality of work, research and discoveries in the field of astronomy. There is also conducted 4 Symposium of the International Astronomical Union.
