National Press Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan July 22 in the day of the release of the first printed edition of the newspaper "Ekinchi" ("plowman", 1875-1877), Hasan Bey Zardabi.
The national press of Azerbaijan greatly influenced the formation of the national self-consciousness in the late 19th — early 20th centuries, it is not in the least contributed to the establishment of the first democratic republic in the East and granting the right to vote to women in 1919, while at the same time as, for example, in the United States.
Since the 1980s, the national press began to carry out the mission of a free and democratic press, respect for the thoughts and expressions of the people, by promptly reporting updated information, promotion of ideas of pluralism and tolerance.
Presidential Decree of Heydar Aliyev on on August 16 1998 "On measures to ensure the Republic of Azerbaijan of freedom of speech, thought and information" was abolished censorship of the media information in the country.
This decree gave a major boost to the accelerated development of the media, has identified the main directions of the general state of the program in improving their rationality.
