Former names Astana: Akmola — 1830 — 1961, Tzelinograd — 1961-1992 years Akmola — 1992-1998 year. on May 6 in 1998, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed decree to rename the capital of the Republic of Akmola to Astana.
